Vancouver is the rainforest-meets-skyscraper city, wedged between the Pacific and the Coast Mountains. The smart move is to base downtown and use the SeaBus to North Vancouver for Day 3. This itinerary walks the Stanley Park seawall on Day 1, hits Granville Island on Day 2, and ends across the harbour at Capilano + Grouse Mountain.

Day 1

Stanley Park · Gastown · downtown · ~10 km walking

Stanley Park seawall, Gastown brick wander, downtown coffee crawl, a Yaletown dinner.

8:30 AM
Revolver Coffee
Gastown · Specialty coffee · CAD 5
Vancouver's coffee bar of record. Reclaimed wood, pour-overs, the morning coder crowd. Pair with a kouign-amann from Beaucoup Bakery if you wander west.
↓ Bus 19 to Stanley Park, 12 min, CAD 3.20
9:30 AM
Stanley Park seawall walk
Stanley Park · 10km waterfront path · free
Walk or bike the seawall counterclockwise from the totem poles — Brockton Point, the Nine O'Clock Gun, Lions Gate Bridge underneath, Prospect Point lookout. Full loop is 10km in 2-3 hours. Bike rental at the entrance, CAD 15/hour.
Tip: Cycling is faster but the seawall is one of the world's great walks — do at least half on foot.
Lunch · CAD 25
Stanley's Bar & Grill in the park for honest Canadian fare. Or pack a deli lunch from Meat & Bread (Gastown) before heading in.
1:30 PM
Gastown wander
Gastown · Cobbled historic district · free
Vancouver's birthplace. Walk the cobbled streets, photograph the Gastown Steam Clock (it whistles every 15 min), browse independent designers, peek at the gritty edge of East Hastings (Vancouver's open-air recovery problem) and then move on.
3:30 PM
Vancouver Art Gallery + Robson Square
Downtown · Art museum · CAD 29
Emily Carr, Robert Davidson, and rotating contemporary. Allow 90 min. The Tuesday-evening half-price slot (CAD 14) is the better deal if your dates land right.
Dinner · CAD 50
Hawksworth in the Rosewood Hotel Georgia for the trip's elevated west-coast dinner, CAD 60 mains. Realistic: The Acorn (Mt Pleasant) for vegetarian fine dining, CAD 45. Or Joe Fortes (downtown) for the classic Vancouver oyster bar.
Nightcap
The Diamond (Gastown, 2nd floor) for cocktails and a Maple Leaf Square view. Or Keefer Bar (Chinatown) for the apothecary cocktails with Chinese herbs.

Day 2

Granville Island · Kitsilano · sunset on the beach · ~8 km walking

Granville Island morning, Kitsilano afternoon, sunset on Kits Beach. The chill day.

9:00 AM
Aquabus to Granville Island
False Creek · Mini ferry · CAD 4
Take the rainbow-painted Aquabus from Yaletown to Granville Island — 5-min commuter ferry. Or walk over the Granville Street Bridge.
9:30 AM
Granville Island Public Market
Granville Island · Market + crafts · free entry
One of North America's best public markets — cheese hall, charcuterie, salmon jerky, fresh berries (in season). Wander the craft stalls and the kids' market upstairs. Allow 90 min.
Tip: Skip the salmon-shaped fudge tourist trap — the artisan cheeses on the back wall are the real prize.
Lunch · CAD 22
Edible Canada for elevated west-coast lunch (Cowichan oysters, salt-spring mussels). Or stall-hopping in the market — grab from A La Mode (pies), Stuart's Bakery, Lee's Donuts.
↓ Bus 50 to Kitsilano, 15 min
1:30 PM
Kitsilano Beach + Vanier Park
Kitsilano · Beach + park · free
Walk Kits Beach (the surf-yoga crowd's beach) into Vanier Park — the Museum of Vancouver and HR MacMillan Space Centre. The beach is the calmer alternative to Stanley Park's English Bay.
3:00 PM
Museum of Anthropology at UBC
UBC campus · First Nations + global collections · CAD 18
30-min Uber west to UBC. Arthur Erickson's concrete-and-glass building houses one of the world's best First Nations collections — carved totem poles, Bill Reid's Raven and the First Men sculpture. Allow 2 hours.
Tip: Closed Mondays. Late opening Thursdays until 9pm.
6:30 PM
Kits Beach sunset
Kitsilano · Beach · free
Walk back to Kits or English Bay for the sunset. The Pacific framed by Vancouver Island silhouette. Locals' favorite hour.
Dinner · CAD 40
Maenam (Kitsilano, modern Thai) for the trip's most surprising dinner, CAD 35 mains. Or Anh and Chi (Mt Pleasant Vietnamese), CAD 30. Or stay downtown: Miku for aburi (flame-seared) sushi, CAD 60.
Nightcap
Royal Dinette for cocktails near downtown, or Pourhouse in Gastown. Or go to bed early — Day 3 is a 7am start.

Day 3

Capilano · Grouse Mountain · Lonsdale Quay · ~6 km walking

North Shore mountains day. SeaBus across, Capilano suspension bridge, Grouse Mountain gondola, Lonsdale Quay return.

8:00 AM
SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay
Waterfront · 12-min ferry · CAD 3.20
From Waterfront station, board the SeaBus — 12-min ferry across Burrard Inlet. Sit on the harbor side. Sea otters sometimes visible.
8:30 AM
Bus 236 to Capilano + bridge
North Vancouver · Suspension bridge park · CAD 70
Or skip the lineup-prone Capilano and do the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge (free, smaller, just-as-pretty 5 min east). At Capilano, walk the 137m-long, 70m-high suspension bridge over the canyon, the treetops adventure, the cliffwalk. Allow 2 hours.
Tip: Free shuttle from Canada Place picks up daily from 9am if you skip the SeaBus.
↓ Bus 236 to Grouse Mountain base, 15 min
11:30 AM
Grouse Mountain gondola or Grouse Grind
Grouse Mountain · Mountain · CAD 75 gondola or free hike
Either: ride the 8-min Skyride gondola to the summit (CAD 75, includes lumberjack show, raptor presentation, and grizzly bears). Or hike the Grouse Grind (free, 853m elevation gain in 2.9km — locals' fitness test, 60-90 min). At the top: panorama over the city + Burrard Inlet + Vancouver Island.
Lunch · CAD 25
Altitudes Bistro at the Grouse summit (gondola included). Or pack from Lonsdale Quay and picnic at the summit.
↓ Bus + SeaBus back to Lonsdale Quay, 30 min
3:00 PM
Lonsdale Quay Market
North Vancouver · Market · free entry
North Vancouver's smaller market — food stalls, crafts, the view back across to downtown. Walk the harbor pier.
4:30 PM
SeaBus back at golden hour
Lonsdale to Waterfront · SeaBus · CAD 3.20
Time it for golden-hour skyline. The Vancouver skyline against the Coast Mountains is the trip's last great photo.
Dinner · CAD 55
Ask for Luigi (Railtown, Italian, no-rezo line out the door but worth it). Or Phnom Penh (Chinatown, Cambodian-Vietnamese, the chicken wings are city legend), CAD 30. Or splurge: St. Lawrence Restaurant for Quebecois-fine-dining in Railtown, CAD 75.
Nightcap
Botanist Bar at Fairmont Pacific Rim for the rooftop view + craft cocktails. Or Keefer one more time. Or anywhere in Gastown with patio seating for the final maple-syrup tinged Old Fashioned.

Got a 4th day? Whistler.

Two hours north via the Sea-to-Sky Highway (CAD 100 by bus or rental car). Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days enough for Vancouver?

Three days covers Stanley Park, Granville Island, Capilano/Grouse, Kitsilano and the downtown core. It does not cover Whistler or Victoria. For first-time visitors, 3 days is right for the city; add a 4th for Whistler or Victoria.

What's the best order to do this itinerary in?

Stanley Park + Gastown Day 1 to orient and seawall, Granville Island + Kitsilano Day 2 (relaxed, water-side), North Shore mountains Day 3 (full active day with SeaBus). Capilano is weather-sensitive — flex to the best forecast day.

How much does a 3-day Vancouver trip cost?

Mid-range: CAD 700-950 ($510-700 USD) per person. Budget hostel: CAD 400-550. High-end with Pacific Rim + Hawksworth: CAD 2,500+.

Where should I stay for this itinerary?

Downtown or Coal Harbour for Day 1 and 3 walkability. Gastown for character and historic streets. Yaletown for the Aquabus to Granville Island and quieter nights. Avoid East Hastings hotels — rough area.

Capilano or Lynn Canyon?

Lynn Canyon is free and just as pretty (smaller bridge, public-park feel). Capilano is the famous one with the treetops adventure and cliffwalk, but CAD 70 and queue-heavy. Pick Lynn for the local experience, Capilano if you want the full theme-park version.

Should I do the Grouse Grind or the Skyride?

Grind if you're fit (853m elevation in 2.9km, 60-90 min, locally famous). Skyride if you want the lumberjack show + grizzlies + view in 8 minutes. You can hike up and ride down for CAD 25.

Is Vancouver safe?

Yes broadly. Downtown, Gastown, Yaletown, Kitsilano, North Vancouver all calm. East Hastings (a few blocks east of Gastown) has Canada's most visible homelessness and recovery crisis — don't wander there at night.
